About the Position
This is an incredible opportunity for a young scientist to gain hands-on experience and work intimately with a seasoned coastal ecologist across a broad range of projects. Working with the Thriving Islands Marine Program Director as well as seasonal interns, this position will provide a comprehensive training program that enables entry level environmental scientists to enhance their skills in restoration practices, underwater surveys, data management, outreach and education.
The Coastal Resilience Technician will be a critical team member in executing a myriad of projects including: elkhorn coral planting, long-term monitoring of coastlines with UVI partners, coral spawning research, coral bleaching surveys, collection and planting of coral fragments of opportunity, storm damage assessment and post-storm planting of corals, measuring temperature and sediment impacts on reefs, ecological assessments of fish and urchin populations, assisting with growing mangroves, and providing auxiliary support to the native plant nursery.
Outreach and education activities will include helping with nursery tours for school groups and summer camps, creating educational material related to coastal ecosystems, giving educational presentations to dive shops across St Croix, tabling at the Earth Day and Agricultural fair events, as well as assisting with social media and newsletter postings.
Requirements
Educational Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Bachelor's degree in a marine or environmental science or equivalent work experience
Technical Skills & Experience
1 year experience in coastal fieldwork
Knowledge of coral reef ecosystems
Training in common marine field equipment used underwater (slates, transects, measuring sticks)
Preferred Certifications
Advanced Scuba Diving Certification (AAUS preferred)
O2, CPR, and First Aid certification
Divers Alert Network (DAN) insurance

Physical Requirements
Ability to lift heavy objects and work in various weather conditions.
Comfortable shore diving as well as from boats.
